A round room is and will forever be breath-taking!

Arrival

The Grand Hotel in Lund is exactly what one expects a “grand’ hotel to look like.

A large, majestic building located in the middle of town, on a fine plaza with a fountain.

Elegant, clean and smart-typical for Scandinavia.

The staircase leading up to the hotel has the obligatory red carpet, putting you in the frame of mind of princesses, fairy tales and polite manners.

The reception area is exquisite with a great crystal chandelier and many choice details. The receptionist was prepared for my arrival and provided me with a  wonderful introduction to the hotel, a parking card and directions as to where I could park my car.  A friendly and professional welcome-exactly how I like it.

Design and decor

Grand Hotel in Lund has 89 rooms and the hotel is massive enough to feel comfortable enough to explore.  There are several secluded halls that you can secretly enter and start daydreaming.  The main ballroom is incredibly impressive, with balconies all the way around and an opulent ceiling with gold-plated stucco, and angels keeping watch over the princesses. The window frames on the staircase are beautiful, old and well kept.

They did a really good job at retaining the classical style and all the details of the interior are in keeping with the whole.

Ambiance

The atmosphere here is a bit solemn, not at all homey or personal.

The staff is professional, but nothing more than that. A typical “Grand Hotel” feel-in Scandinavia!  We are a slightly closed culture and not known to overpower strangers with kindness.  A Grand Hotel in New York would have had a very distinct friendly and welcoming quality.  In the nordic countries, we keep to ourselves and only politely ask about the more obvious subjects.  It’s a bit unexciting,  but that is what can be expected.

Room

My gorgeous and classic room was in the round tower part of the hotel.

A round room is and will forever be breath-taking! They managed to keep an authentic respect for the original decor and style of the building.  I had a French balcony looking over the street and lots of light flooding the room. It was magnificently decorated as a castle should be, with details of gold and velour, luxurious armchairs, a desk and a large bed with plenty of space on either side.

A truly spectacular room!

Though there was no coffee or tea in the room, there was  a room in the hallway with a Nespresso machine and the whole range of coffee capsules to choose from.

I did have a lush bathrobe and lavish toiletries. No freebies though!

Restaurant

The hotel has a restaurant that looks out onto the square. Again, it is very well-kept but a tad duller than I had expected.  The food is good and the service is outstanding.  It’s here that breakfast was served, though I have heard that breakfast is usually served in one of the large, elegant halls.

Breakfast was basic; a typical boring Swedish breakfast. Nothing more.

Overall.

  • An exquisite hotel

  • Good value for money

  • Perfect place to park your car in town, close to everything and in a charming neighbourhood

  • Can highly recommend it if you need a little royal-sugarcoating in your life

  • I had a wonderful dreamy stay at Grand Hotel Lund!

  • great for one or max two nights - not more

TIP

Always take the stairs when visiting a hotel, for it is there that you can find exciting details on each floor.

I couldn’t dream of being at a hotel and not checking out each floor and trying to find all the rooms -just out of curiosity.
