A palace for under 200 euros!

Arrival

When a man with a high hat and a uniform opens the door and takes my bag, I am delighted. It feels so glamorous-I love it!

The reception was busy with many people standing ready to check-in. A fine yet standard check-in with no personal episodes.

Design and decor

There is so much gold here you can see your reflection everywhere. A sea of exquisite detail, large rooms, broad staircases and the man with the high hat. The room keys are so big you can’t fit them into your pocket.

The roof terrace sports a pool however, it is a bland experience. There is so much space that hasn’t been decorated or paid any attention to. The small fitness area is badly placed and takes everyone’s attention as they enter the terrace. It is both dumb and a pity.

Ambiance

This is where the Beatles, Liza Minelli and Ernest Hemingway hung out. One can smell it and feel the history here as it has been preserved in a very respectful way. I really appreciated that. A vast lobby with sofas and people that, though they are hanging out, are not doing so in a relaxed and social manner. The mood here seems almost formal. It is like going back in time, where one sits, well-dressed, at the edge of the sofa, sipping tea and nodding politely to the other guests and the man with the high hat! The only thing missing was a genuine prince to hold my hand while I descended the long, broad, carpeted staircase. All in all, it was a fun experience, especially exploring the more distant areas that included a ballroom and a banquet room. Amazing design!

Room

A classic room, in line with the rest of the hotel. Well designed with sitting place and large closet, good hangers, full-length mirror and a blowdryer. And a great bed! Cosy bathrobe (but lousy slippers).

I was disappointed though to not have a room with a balcony.

Restaurant

The hotel’s restaurant has a more modern design than the rest of the hotel. It is a combination of restaurant, bar and café. We had wine and chocolate mousse that was truly delicious!

Overall

  • I gave myself a challenge to find a palace for under 200 euros a night, and I succeeded!

  • Avenida Palace is an incredibly beautiful hotel

  • It is a fun stay because of the design

  • There are more rooms here than I usually like, but it’s okay when it’s a palace
