Krakow

Stary Hotel in Polen

Arrival

This was my first time in Krakow and I was really excited to investigate the city and its hotels.

The Stary Hotel has a spectacular wooden door framing its entry, but otherwise the entrance is imperceptible -in a cool way!

The reception area is classic yet a bit dull.  Though there were many staff, hospitality was not top-notch.  All in all, a very traditional welcome, without personality; a too serious feel that bores me SOOO much that I  wanted to provoke the receptionist!  But I behaved properly while being given my room key, map of town et al.

Design and Decor

Though Stary is a beautiful, medium-size hotel, it’s not a boutique hotel.  There is more of a castle vibe with stone walls, high ceilings, marble floor, concrete panels and heavy wooden doors.  It is impressive, though the furniture and decor is a bit outdated and uninspired.

There is a restaurant located near the reception; a breakfast restaurant hidden away in the basement and a spa/pool floor.

The pool!!!  A super charming pool hidden in the ground- a real pool cave! I think this is one of the gems of the hotel- a huge plus in my eyes.

It is truly rare to find a hotel in the middle of town with such an unusual ambiance. The castle character is very interesting and gives a unique impression.  Awesome!

 Ambiance

I wasn’t crazy about the impersonal atmosphere. It felt almost impossible to meet the other guests. The staff was detached. I could hardly feel the hotel. For me, a truly good hotel has its personality, as well as the ability to arouse emotion and leave me with good memories- just as meeting a remarkable person does.  This hotel doesn’t do that. It’s impressive on the outside but leaves no lasting impression within.

Room

The room was large with unbelievably high ceilings. Impressive!

Concrete walls with wallpaper remnants gave it an interesting look.  There was hefty, rustic furniture, long, heavy curtains and a nice bathroom.  An impressive room-but not at all cosy.  You need to be into this look to like the style. I found it different and fascinating and was happy with the experience.

Restaurant

I didn’t visit the restaurant; and the breakfast was nothing to write home about. Very standard food, taste and setting.

Location

Stary Hotel is superbly placed in the centre of town, close to everything, at the good end of the city’s main square.

I spent a lot of time at the local spas which are cheap here and had a crazy night out with some business associates. I can assure you that the nightlife here is brilliant!!
