Hotel La Casa Païral - France
Arrival
Collioure is a fantastic little seaport town on the French Mediterranean coast close to the Spanish border. It was a hang out spot in the 40s for many artists-and it is easy to understand why with the light, the nature, and its unique ambiance. The hotel is exactly as one would imagine- an appealing French countryside inn.
There are no spelt buns, young entrepreneurs with laptops or smart modern design here.
By contrast, the traditional decor has masses of charm and soul. A family hotel, that has been passed down for generations and with each new owner it acquires a few more details. The style swings in different directions which it makes it fun to explore. Gilded frames hang on the walls, next to straw hats you can borrow and a carafe of sherry that awaits as the owner offers you a glass in the evening when you enter the common room.
Ambiance
The garden is incredibly beautiful, with a fountain that makes a perfect rippling sound. Elegant old trees, flowers and French wrought iron garden furniture give it a truly authentic feel. It all makes you just want to sit with your straw hat, drink homemade lemonade and read a romance book about a French castle long-away.
When you sit in the garden, you feel very removed from the hectic little tourist town. Yes, Collioure can feel hectic especially in high season, or on Sunday, market day. So it is a real pleasure to be able to retreat and enjoy the real “French vibe” in the garden.
Room
I was in a modernized room with a view to the garden and a french balcony. They did a good job renovating considering it is France (where they have no decor style). Their choice of design elements was a bit crazy, but is what also gave it a charming, eclectic touch. The best was that, unlike many other French countryside hotels, it was not cold. There was no coffee or tea in the room. It’s a throwback to the older hotels with big keys and soap that smells of soap and no fancy details.
Restaurant
There is only breakfast offered here- and an evening sherry. The breakfast is a typical French breakfast, very traditional but a bit boring. The most interesting element was the egg-cooker that allows you to cook your own egg. I thought that was a super idea.
